Preparing Your Home for Your Newborn Photoshoot

by | Mar 19, 2023 | WEDDINGS

Welcoming a newborn into your home is such a special time, and I’m honored to help capture these first precious moments. To ensure our session goes smoothly and results in beautiful, timeless images, here are a few things to keep in mind as we prepare your space.

Creating a Warm and Cozy Environment

Newborns are most comfortable in warm surroundings, especially when they’re swaddled lightly or photographed without clothing. Please keep the room where we’ll be shooting at a cozy temperature—around 24-26°C (75-78°F)—so your little one stays relaxed and comfortable throughout the session.

Embracing Natural Light

Soft, natural light creates the most beautiful, glowing images, so I’d love to set up in a room that gets plenty of daylight. Large windows and light-colored walls work best to reflect sunlight and create a bright, airy feel. If you’re unsure which space would be ideal, just let me know—I’d be happy to help you choose the best spot, either beforehand or when I arrive.

Avoiding harsh overhead lights or direct sunlight will help keep shadows to a minimum, so we’ll adjust our setup as needed to find the perfect balance.

Choosing a Simple and Neutral Background

For a timeless look, I recommend using a clean, uncluttered background—a plain wall, neutral bed linens, or soft, textured throws work beautifully. If there’s anything in the background that might be distracting, feel free to tidy up before the session, or I can help adjust things once I arrive.

Creating a Comfortable Spot for the Baby

I’ll be setting up a cozy little “nest” for your baby, usually by stacking two sofa cushions and layering them with soft blankets. If you have any favorite blankets or throws you’d love to include, please have them ready. Otherwise, I can bring along some options that will photograph beautifully.

Props and Personal Touches

If you have any neutral-toned blankets, swaddles, or wraps you’d like to incorporate, I’d love to use them to create soft, textured layers in the photos. Small, simple props—like knitted hats, a tiny stuffed animal, or a sentimental family heirloom—can add a meaningful touch. If you have anything special in mind, just let me know!

That said, keeping props minimal ensures the focus stays on your baby, creating clean and timeless images.

Choosing the Best Room

Not sure which room would be best for the session? No worries! I’m happy to offer suggestions. Ideally, we’ll work in a space with plenty of natural light and a cozy, neutral backdrop.

Allowing Plenty of Time

Newborn sessions are unhurried, typically lasting 1 to 4 hours, depending on your baby’s needs. There will be breaks for feeding, nappy changes, and soothing, so don’t worry if your little one needs a moment—we’ll go at their pace to capture the sweetest, most natural moments.

Family Photos Together

I’d love to include some heartwarming images of you as a family. If you have a favorite spot in your home—a comfy bed, a cozy couch, or even a sunlit corner—let me know so we can plan for those moments. If you need help deciding, I’d be happy to make suggestions once I see the space.

Have Questions? Let Me Know!

If there’s anything else I can bring—extra blankets, wraps, or props—please don’t hesitate to ask. My goal is to make this session as relaxed and enjoyable as possible, so let me know if you have any questions. I can’t wait to capture these beautiful first days with your little one!
